MP Sub Engineer exam is conducted by MPESB i.e. Madhya Pradesh Employees Selection Board for recruitment of Group 3 technical posts in various state departments. But before we jump into the topics, it’s helpful to know how the paper is actually constructed:
One written test – 200 objective type questions, 200 marks, three hours
Divide into two parts: a general one that everybody tries, and a technical one related to your specific engineering discipline
Both parts are equally important so neither can be secondary
Once the weightage is clear, it’s much easier to decide how much time each subject should get. If you are one of those who like to have one organized source instead of scattered notes, then the books and test series of EA Publications from Engineers Academy are a must have along with your study plan.
Overview of MP Sub Engineer Exam 2026
Specific Information
Exam Authority Madhya Pradesh Employee Selection Board (MPESB)
Post Sub Engineer (Group-III)
Total Questions 200
Exam Duration 3 Hours Sections Part A – Non-Technical, Part B – Technical Selection ProcessWritten Examination and Document Verification
MP Sub Engineer Exam Pattern 2026
The paper is divided equally into two parts: Part A having 100 questions from general subjects and Part B having 100 questions from the candidate’s technical discipline. Each question is of 1 mark. The whole paper is done in a single 3 hour period.
Part Topics Questions Marks
Part A General Knowledge, Hindi, English, Mathematics, Reasoning, Science, Computer Knowledge 100 100
Part B Trade-specific technical subject 100 100
Total 200 200
If both sections are equally divided, neither can be pushed aside. Part A covers 7 different subjects and 100 marks spread out that needs constant revision rather than a rushed pass close to exam. Part B tests the depth of a candidate’s core engineering knowledge.
MP Sub Engineer Syllabus 2026 – General Subjects (Section A)
Subject, Main topics
General Knowledge Indian History, Geography, National Movement, Cultural Heritage, Indian Constitution, Economy, Science & Technology, Space and IT, Polity, Important Events
General Hindi Grammar, vocabulary, synonyms-antonyms, idioms, comprehension, fill-in-the-blanks, one word substitution
General English Grammar, Vocabulary, Cloze test, Idioms, Error spotting, Comprehension, One word substitution
General Mathematics Number system, percentage, time and work, decimals and fractions, simplification, ratio-proportion, profit and loss, HCF-LCM, interest, mixtures, data interpretation
Reasoning Ability Analogy, Classification, Coding Decoding, Blood Relations, Direction Sense, Series, Syllogism, Seating Arrangement, Puzzle
General Science Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Science Scientific Discoveries
Computer Knowledge MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Windows, basics of Internet, hardware & software
Mathematics and reasoning need to be solved daily and not read passively. Hindi, English and general science are best studied in brief revision sessions repeatedly. None of these subjects need depth as much as they need consistency across seven areas at a time. General Knowledge needs regular updates of current affairs along with the static parts like history and polity.
MP Sub Engineer Syllabus 2026 – Part B (Technical, Branch Wise)
This is the part that really divides candidates. Part A is common for all, but Part B consists of 100 questions, all from your own engineering stream. So the first thing to do is to pull up the syllabus of your own discipline and forget about the general SSC/JE topic lists.
Mechanical Engineering
Applied Mechanics Strength of Materials Theory of Machines
Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulics
Thermodynamics & Refrigeration
Engineering Materials and Metallurgy,Machine Design
CNC, Manufacturing Technology & Maintenance
Industrial Engineering Production Management Work Study Quality Control
Instrumentation and Metrology
Strength of Materials, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Applied Mechanics are where the numbers come in. You can’t shortcut these by reading alone, they have to be worked through, mistakes and all, until the steps become automatic. Manufacturing and Machine Design want something else: to know a process well enough to remember it, not to calculate it.
Civil Engineering
Applied Mechanics, Soil Mechanics, Surveying
Mechanics of Structures Design of R.C.C and Steel Structures
Hydraulics, Irrigation Engineering, Transport Engineering
Building Construction Building Drawing Material Technology
Cost & Quantity Surveying
Sanitary Engineering and Public Health.
Not all topics here are equally important. Surveying, soil mechanics, RCC and steel design, hydraulics, transportation and estimation are more frequently encountered in practice. If time is short before the exam, prioritizing these is a reasonable call.
Department of Electrical Engineering
Electrical Circuits, Basic Electrical Engineering
Power Systems, Electrical Machines
Electrical Measurements & Instrumentation
Electronics.
Electric Energy Use
Most of what is actually tested here is network theorems, AC-DC analysis, transformers and machines, measuring instruments, semiconductor devices and the transmission-distribution-protection side of power systems. If you have limited study time, these are the areas to protect first.
Quick way to think: each branch has its quota of number-crunching subjects (Strength of Materials, Fluid Mechanics, Machines) and its quota of concept-heavy ones (Materials, Instrumentation, Utilization). The usual way that marks are lost later is to read through once and move on, treating both the same way.
Why Choose EA Publications for MP Sub Engineer Preparation?
Seven general subjects and a full technical syllabus is too much to hold together from scattered PDFs and random YouTube playlists. That’s where having one organized source helps you.
EA Publication’s books for Civil, Mechanical and Electrical are arranged subject-wise – so you go through topics like Strength of Materials, Power Systems or Soil Mechanics roughly in the order they appear in the actual paper
The test series and previous year papers are not there to just give you a score – use it to identify which topics are still weak and whether your speed can actually handle 200 questions in 3 hours
But books and regular testing can help keep the study-practice-revise cycle going, and it’s still up to you to go back and fix the weak spots after each test.
